Ever heard of Antioxidants?
If not, then that’s okay. I hadn’t heard of them until the other week either. Not until my Doctor explained how they work to me.
Basically they neutralize free radicals by donating electrons to them and preventing them from causing harm. In other words, they soak up free radicals like a sponge and prevent them from causing harm to our cells.
If untreated, free radicals can damage cellular structures by bonding to these cells causing them to not function as they should. They can be formed via this natural process, but are exacerbated by stress, diet, smoking, alcohol and exposure to the sun.
New research tells us that it is possible to generate antioxidants from certain foods in our diet!
But don’t all foods high in antioxidants taste really bad?
I thought so too.
The reality, however, is that there are certain foods out there which are high in antioxidants but also taste delicious.
As well as supplementing with Collagen, here are some delicious foods you can eat to get your daily dose of anti-oxidants:
- Dark Chocolate
Yes, chocolate is actually good for you! With an ORAC score of 21,000, there’s no tastier food you can eat that gives you your daily dose of antioxidants.
So eat it as a dessert after your meals without feeling guilty!
For best results, stick with 75%, 85% or 90% darkness. Just be warned that the higher the percentage, the less sweet the chocolate is. So if you have a sweet tooth, definitely stick with 75%!
This one is quite close to home for me personally, because as a child I used to dream of going strawberry picking in the fields. In fact, one day I would love to be proposed to in a strawberry field.
With an ORAC score of 4,302, you can ear strawberries while being safe with the knowledge that they’re helping you look younger.
Another fruit I ate way too much of as a child, blueberries have an ORAC score of 14,000.
What does this mean?
It means the total antioxidant capacity is the second highest of all foods you’ll find in your local supermarket!
So you can eat this delicious fruit while having the peace of mind that it’s destroying any free-radicals lingering in your body.
- Goji Berries
Ah yes. Good old goji berries. The food with the highest anti-oxidant capacity of all foods, with an ORAC of 25,000.
Wondering how to add it to your daily meals?
Simply sprinkle a handful onto your morning cereal or eat a handful as an afternoon snack.
If you make a daily habit of eating the three foods above, you’ll notice :
- Reduced lines and wrinkles on your forehead and around your eyes;
- Reduced redness and puffiness under your eyes;
- Younger, tighter and more lifted looking skin;
- Less saggy or loose skin;
- Healthier, stronger hair;
- A more youthful, active and exuberant mind.
So follow the dietary tips above, meditate, stress less, get at least 8 hours of sleep a night and exercise every day. You’ll be healthier and you’ll look and feel your best!
