How to Eat Healthy at a Restaurant

Your friends have invited you to your favourite restaurant to celebrate your good friend’s birthday.

You’re excited, not only because you’ll get to enjoy good company, but also because you’ll get to enjoy your favourite food.

Then you think back to the new “healthy you” you promised your wife as part of your new years resolution… How can you maintain the new healthy you while still enjoying a good meal at your favourite restaurant?

  • Order a salad as entree

Scientists have recently discovered that people who eat salad before their main course are more likely to eat less with their main course than those who didn’t. Not to mention you’ll get far more healthy nutrients from the salad. If you feel like being super healthy, order a garden salad. And have your niacin before your meal if you’re trying to be really healthy.

  • Order fish

Fish contains far less fat and sodium than red meat, and most of the fat is high in omega-3, which is good for your brain, your heart and your joints. Just make sure you don’t order fried fish.

  • Drink water throughout your meal

Yes, it will trick your brain into thinking you’re fully than you actually are, meaning you’ll eat less

  • Trim the fat off any meat or chicken

This one may be slightly obvious, but can easily be forgotten. The fat tastes good, I can understand. But eating it is certainly not doing your health any favours.

  • Skip dessert

A coffee instead, or some dark chocolate at home is the better option. Way better than the triple chocolate fondant or the double serving of strawberry ice-cream you’ll be offered at the restaurant.

  • Scoop out the sour cream from the baked potato

Another one perhaps a tad on the obvious side. A serving of sour cream (2 tablespoons) provides just 52 calories. That’s half the amount of calories you’ll find in a single tablespoon of mayonnaise!

  • Skip the bread basket

High in gluten and processed carbohydrates, you’re better off without the bread basket. Opt for a salad as an entree instead.

  • Be an assertive customer

If you want to stay healthy while eating out, it’s no time to be timid. You need to assume you can order things the way you want it, because you are a customer after all. Ask for grilled instead of fried. Ask for a baked potato instead of fries. Be assertive, and your body will thank you for it.

  • Ask for no MSG (Monosodium Glutamate)

An important one if you’re at a Chinese restaurant especially. Often used as a flavour enhancer, MSG has been linked to allergies, headaches and allergic reactions. Avoid the MSG and you also won’t feel so tired after your meal!
